Grounding, bonding and earthing in data centers

Grounding and bonding are fundamental electrical-safety functions in data centers. Their purpose includes providing effective fault-current paths, maintaining equipotential conditions, supporting protective-device operation and reducing hazardous touch voltages.

Protective earthing

Exposed conductive parts of electrical equipment should be connected to the protective earthing system according to the applicable installation design. The fault path must have suitable continuity and impedance so protection can operate as intended.

Equipotential bonding

Bonding connects conductive parts to reduce dangerous potential differences. In data centers this can include switchgear enclosures, cable trays, racks, containment structures and other conductive infrastructure as required by the design.

Do not confuse functional and protective requirements

Some electronic systems use reference or functional grounding arrangements for signal performance. These requirements should not compromise protective-earthing obligations.

Racks and pathways

Metal racks, ladder racks and cable-support systems should be addressed consistently in the bonding design. Mechanical continuity should not be assumed where painted joints, removable sections or nonconductive hardware may interrupt the path.

UPS and separately derived sources

UPS systems, transformers and generators can create different neutral and earthing arrangements depending on design. Switching devices and bonding points must be coordinated so the system does not create unintended parallel neutral paths or incorrect fault protection.

Verification

IEC 60364-6:2026 provides requirements for initial and periodic verification of low-voltage electrical installations, including inspection and testing. The final verification method should follow the actual earthing system and applicable local requirements.

Operational controls

  • Keep earthing drawings current.
  • Inspect bonding connections during maintenance.
  • Control modifications to cable trays and racks.
  • Verify continuity after major alterations.
  • Coordinate neutral and earth arrangements with source-transfer design.
