Structured cabling is permanent data center infrastructure. Poor pathway design, undocumented patching or uncontrolled cable growth can reduce maintainability and create operational risk even when the active network equipment is highly redundant.
Plan the topology before installing cable
Telecommunications rooms, distribution areas, equipment rows and external carrier interfaces should be planned as part of the data center architecture. ANSI/TIA-942-C and ISO/IEC TS 22237-5 address telecommunications infrastructure and cabling within data centers.
Select media for the application
Fiber is commonly used for high-speed, longer-distance and high-density backbone links, while balanced copper remains useful for many equipment, management and short-reach connections. Selection should consider required data rate, reach, connector system, transceiver strategy, electromagnetic environment, density and expected migration path.
Protect pathway diversity
Where A and B network paths are intended to be independent, their physical routing should avoid unnecessary common points. Diverse trays or pathways, controlled crossings and separation from hazards help prevent one physical event from damaging both logical paths.
Control bend radius, fill and support
Cables should be installed within manufacturer limits for bend radius and pulling tension and should be properly supported. Excessive congestion makes future changes difficult and can contribute to damaged connectors, blocked airflow and poor housekeeping.
Label and document every connection
Labels should identify both ends and correspond with controlled records. Patch panels, ports, fiber trunks, copper links and pathway identifiers should be consistent with drawings and the network source of truth.
Test before service
Installed permanent links should be tested with appropriate certified test equipment against the specified cabling category or optical acceptance criteria. Results should be retained as commissioning and lifecycle records.
