A successful data center design begins with controlled requirements. If availability, capacity, growth, security, maintainability and environmental objectives are vague, later design decisions become inconsistent and difficult to verify.
Start with business and service requirements
Define the services to be supported, criticality, required capacity, expected growth, availability objectives, regulatory constraints, security needs and operational model before selecting technical solutions.
Build the Basis of Design
The Basis of Design should translate requirements into technical criteria covering site, architecture, power, cooling, telecommunications, fire protection, monitoring, physical security and maintainability. TIA-942-C addresses minimum requirements across these major data-center infrastructure domains.
Use measurable criteria
Requirements should be testable wherever possible. Examples include IT load, rack density, redundancy topology, autonomy, temperature envelope, allowable single points of failure, maintainability expectations and telecommunications diversity.
Maintain traceability
Each important design decision should trace back to an approved requirement or risk decision. Traceability allows reviewers to determine why a feature exists and what would be affected if it changes.
Control assumptions and deviations
Assumptions should be recorded and validated. Deviations from the approved design basis should follow formal technical review and change control, including assessment of cost, schedule, resilience and commissioning impact.
