Fire-system commissioning in a data center is not complete when detectors activate and the fire panel shows an alarm. The commissioning process must prove that detection, suppression, ventilation, doors, shutdown commands, monitoring interfaces and emergency controls operate together according to the approved fire strategy.
Document review
Before functional tests begin, confirm approved fire drawings, detector layouts, hydraulic or gaseous-system calculations, cause-and-effect matrix, sequence descriptions, equipment data, zoning, alarm stages and authority approvals. The installed field system should match these documents.
Device inspection
Verify detector locations, sampling pipes, manual call points, sounders, strobes, control modules, suppression cylinders, nozzles, pre-action valves, pressure switches, abort controls, manual-release stations and signage.
Construction dust, temporary covers and incomplete cable sealing should be addressed before acceptance testing.
Fire alarm panel testing
Test each device address or zone, alarm text, location description, supervisory condition, fault condition and communication path. Incorrect point descriptions can significantly delay incident response even when the detector works correctly.
Aspirating-system testing
Verify airflow, sampling holes, alarm stages, fault supervision and integration with the main fire alarm panel. Tests should be performed with the final HVAC configuration because room airflow affects smoke transport.
Clean-agent release logic
Test the complete release sequence using approved methods that prevent unintended discharge. Verify detector confirmation logic, pre-discharge alarms, time delay, HVAC shutdown or damper operation, manual release, abort function and release outputs.
Cylinder release devices should be handled strictly according to manufacturer and safety procedures.
Room integrity
Where gaseous suppression is used, perform enclosure integrity testing to verify the protected space can retain the required concentration. Record any leakage paths and complete corrective sealing before acceptance.
Pre-action interfaces
Test detection inputs, pre-action valve actuation logic, supervisory pressure, water-flow alarm where applicable and valve status monitoring. Verify that isolation valves are supervised and restored to the correct position.
Cause-and-effect verification
Every output in the approved matrix should be functionally proven. This can include fire doors, dampers, fan shutdowns, access-control release, emergency power-off interfaces, BMS alarms, security alarms and suppression release.
Failure scenarios
- Detector fault or communication failure.
- Blocked aspirating pipe or airflow fault.
- Suppression system disabled or cylinder fault.
- Pre-action valve supervisory condition.
- Loss of fire alarm communication to remote monitoring.
- HVAC command fails to operate.
- System left in bypass after testing.
Integrated Systems Testing
Integrated testing should simulate a realistic fire event and verify the combined response of detection, alarms, suppression controls, HVAC, electrical interfaces, access control, security monitoring and operator procedures. The goal is to prove the fire strategy, not just individual devices.
Handover and records
The final package should include as-built drawings, cause-and-effect matrix, test records, room-integrity results, device lists, settings, software backups, impairment procedures, maintenance requirements and operator training evidence.
